Regional Launch: Oceana’s Special Session at the First Philippines Small-Scale Fisheries National Symposium
Oceana hosted a special session during the First Philippines Small-Scale Fisheries National Symposium hosted by the Too Big To Ignore (TBTI) Philippines and the University of the Philippines Visayas, gathering experts and key stakeholders to address the issue of postharvest fish losses in coastal communities.
The session explored the significant impact of postharvest fish losses, contributing to food insecurity, malnutrition, and economic challenges in these areas. With small-scale fisheries playing a vital role in the country’s marine resource management, it is crucial to implement sustainable practices and effective fisheries management systems to mitigate losses.
In the session, Oceana and our partner scientists, local government unit, and artisanal fishers introduced and launched regionally, Oceana’s FINS campaign to Reduce Post Harvest Losses and Boost Livelihoods. The session concluded with a Seal of “CoLOVEboration” and A Pledge of Commitment by all the participants.
This session reaffirmed Oceana and all the stakeholders’ commitment to supporting artisanal fishers through our campaigns and ongoing advocacy for sustainable fisheries. The event served as a platform for discussing collaborative solutions to the pressing issues surrounding PHFL, aiming to improve fisherfolk livelihoods, enhance food security, and protect marine ecosystems.
