We celebrated 2022 as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture with artisanal fishers, who ironically continue to be the most food insecure of sectors in our country. If we are to achieve the best life for them, their families, and coastal communities in our archipelago, we must continue working together towards noteworthy achievements and milestones this 2023.
Oceana and our partners and allies will continue to stand up for the Filipino people and the ocean. The government’s full implementation of the Fisheries Code, as amended, particularly the rules on vessel monitoring measures must wait no more.
Let us all stop lawlessness in our ocean and uphold transparency in governance to achieve the optimum benefits of the progressive legal framework in the Philippine Constitution – the right of every Filipino to a healthful and balanced ecology. .
We are running out of time!
2023 should be the year when all of government stand up for the Filipino people, particularly the poor, the marginalized, the young and the future generation. We call on our people to continue to hold the government accountable and compel government officials to perform their mandates and enforce their duties under the law.
