Developing the Sardine Management Plan for Fisheries Management Area 7

Small pelagic fisheries make up over half of total marine capture fisheries production in the Philippines. Of this, sardines make up the bulk, comprising one out of every 6 kg of fish caught in Philippine seas. From 2016-2020, annual total sardine production in the country averaged about 348,300 metric tons (mt), down from over 450,000 mt in 2009 (Philippine Statistics Authority Fisheries Statistics). The decrease over the past decade indicates reduced productivity of local stocks, making sound management plans urgent.
