Assessment of Post-harvest Fish Losses and Fish Consumption in Coastal Communities Along San Bernardino Strait and Samar Bays & Channels

Oceana commissioned a study to assess postharvest fish losses (PHFL) and fish consumption patterns in coastal communities along the Samar Sea, focusing on Northern Samar and Samar provinces. These regions face significant challenges related to food security and poverty, with post-harvest losses averaging 40% of the catch. The study revealed that inadequate handling, storage, and infrastructure contribute to substantial quality and physical losses. It also identified key fish species with high loss rates, such as sardines and anchovies, which are crucial for local nutrition. The findings highlight the need for improved postharvest handling, cold storage facilities, and better market systems to reduce losses and enhance livelihoods. To address these issues, Oceana recommends policies that include better fish catch monitoring, training for local fishers, improved marketing linkages, and the integration of fisheries into nutritional programs. These measures aim to ensure that coastal communities benefit from sustainable livelihoods while improving food security through better fish access and consumption.
